From the "Trail of Tears" to Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn, the narrative of American history is incomplete without the inclusion of the Native Americans that lived on the continent before European settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the first contact between natives and settlers, tribes like the Sioux, Cherokee, and Navajo have both fascinated and perplexed outsiders with their history, language, and culture. In Charles River Editors' Native American Tribes series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the history and culture of North America's most famous native tribes in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

From 1804-1806, the first American expedition across the North American continent was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, who had recently bought a vast swath of territory from France. Though he knew he had bought a huge amount of land, Jefferson wasn't entirely sure of what he had bought, so he asked a team led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to traverse the continent until they reached the Pacific, studying everything from the ecology to geography along the way to get an understanding of the country's new region.

Lewis and Clark would find far more than they bargained for. The 33 members who made the trip came into contact with about two dozen Native American tribes, and none were more important than the Shoshone, who the expedition referred to as "Snake" Indians.

This 39-page summary of the Shoshone is a useful, if brief, booklet about a most unique among the various Native American.

Unlike many of the other Native American groups, the Shoshone came to occupy the vast Great Basin and beyond, to the north into Idaho, and east of Yellowstone, where the assimilated into the Plains Indian lifestyle, and to the south and around a Death Valey, Southern California and so forth.

In each region, the adapted to their environment --- no simple feat.

Further, through Sacajawea (Tsi-ka-ki-wi-as), the Shoshone were of huge assistance to Lewis and Clark on their Voyage of Discovery when President Jefferson completed the Louisiana Purchase.

Shame though that before many decades elapsed, Americans set out to usurp the best Shoshone lands and killed vast numbers of their people.

The 39-page Native American Tribes: The History and a culture of the Shoshone is not intended to be a comprehensive history. It is, though, a valuable quick read that I believe is a must-read booklet at a bargain price.

Native American Tribes The History and Culture of the Shoshone (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Scott Clem Books Reviews

Good facts, fast paced, gives you in a nutshell the down and dirty on the Shoshone. These Charles River books are very short and focused on just the essential facts, but for a fast overview, not bad.
There are many other books about the Shoshone people available that would be more valuable than this short, incomplete manuscript.
I bought this book for my mother as a gift. She absolutely loved it
I bought this as research for a novel I am working. I devoured in a matter of days. It's very informative, interesting and well written. History buffs will definitely want to check this book out.
“The Shoshone”, a Native American Tribes series book by the Charles River Editors

This small (50+ pages) booklet is a very good work and provides a succinct yet very informative vignette of the Shoshone Indian tribe. Very well done.
I have always respected and admired the Native American Indians. The Shoshone were remarkable in their evolution through their customs and culture. The European influence and movement into the Indian country was very enlightening.
This is another fine Charles River Editors work about the Native American tribes. This one deals with the various Shoshone cultures. It also talks a bit about Sacajewea, and her importance in the development of the West by the US. It also addresses at the end the complicated role she has in history, and to this day.

Amazing how quickly the horse was adapted by various groups. Loved the details on how some proto-Shoshone survived on their migrations.

772 locations long. Picked it up while free.
