Sophia and the Fisherman edition by Fran Connor Literature Fiction eBooks

Sophia and the Fisherman by Fran Connor starts off with a very disgruntled Sophia taking a two week vacation in the south of France. The reason for her vacation? A fairly simple answer for that one: her husband. Or should I say ex-husband, Charlie the Rat, had cheated on her with one of his clients. An escape to the south of France seems like it is just what Sophia needs to forget about Charlie and the headaches of running a furniture business in London. While exploring a small town on the coast, Sophia encounters a stunning man named Laurent whose personality is as intoxicating as his appearance. As a whirlwind romance erupts, Sophia begins to wonder who this man really is, and as new information about Laurent’s past comes to light Sophia begins to question whether she can trust or even be with this man at all.
Sophia and the Fisherman is not the kind of book that I would pick up. When I read the back cover, I thought to myself ‘this is just another romance novel.’ I was wrong. The novel is a short read, but it grabs the reader and refuses to let go as it takes you from England, to France, and the Cote D’Ivoire. The story is well written with few grammatical mistakes and does not have any plot issues that this reader found. While the ending does not poses the twist I was hoping for, it still fits nicely with the story and leaves the reader satisfied.

Sophia and the Fisherman edition by Fran Connor Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Sophia needs a break from her unsuccessful marriage with a husband that cheated on her, and from the demanding furniture business in London. For that reason, she decides to travel to the south of France. While there, she encounters sexy Laurent, a stunning man that will take her breath away while making her wonder if he is to be trusted. The story really starts developing when these two characters meet.
Although it's a considerably short read, I absolutely enjoyed the story and was able to read it in two seats. A woman who's chetated by her husband escapes from reality for a little soul searching, and ends up living an exquisite romance with a mysterious fisherman.
I highly recommend this novel if you love reading and don't have much time to do it. A highly-enjoyable story!
This book started like a lot of semi-romance novels with a trip to a new place, a woman that needed a break from her stressful life, and a handsome stranger that miraculously falls into her path almost immediately, promising exciting new adventures in her new environment. That rather hackneyed framework usually doesn't bode well for the rest of the book, but Connor is a strong writer, and she managed to make the characters interesting enough that I didn't put the book down after the opening 15 pages. However, I found that the short nature of the book made certain things rushed, as though the author was trying to crank this out on a deadline or something. Laurent was intriguing, and his mysterious past and dark secrets were a somewhat original twist on an old cliche. I think that the author should turn her talents to more complex writing, as she clearly has the skills to write a powerful story, but this seemed somewhat below her caliber. That sounds harsh, and this book did deliver exactly what you'd expect - a few hours of entertainment that left you satisfied. Perfect for a plane journey or a day at the beach, but hardly an entrant for the literary canon. Fun and sexy with enough twists to keep the pages turning.
Sophia MacDonald has recently ended an unsatisfactory marriage and decides to take a vacation SW France to clear her head. When she falls into the harbor, she is rescued by a very good looking fisherman, Laurent Mongaudon. She quickly realizes that he is no ordinary fisherman and he has something he is hiding from her. It is a secret that makes her evaluate her values and dreams of the future.

I didn't like Sophia in the beginning because she was such a take charge type of person that she was rude and willingly ran rough shod over people to get her way. As the story progresses, she softens as she realizes that she has a tendency to overreact. I liked the sweet romance that develops between Sophia and Laurent as they learn more about each other. I liked Laurent right away although I did find his behavior suspicious. I definitely didn't blame Sophia for wanting to know what he was hiding. The only thing I disliked was there were a few scenes that were "told" instead of "shown". I felt that it would have added further depth and expression to the characters. Overall, good read for those who love sweet romances with a little bit of mystery thrown in.
I personally like my novels to have a bit more substance to them, and I also like my characters to be slightly less transparent. While there was certainly some element of mystery to the whole story, I feel like things were rushed and there wasn't enough of the plot fleshed out. Sophia was a bit hard to take as a protagonist, and her initial brusque exterior wasn't charming....it sort of put me off. What I was impressed by is that Connor was able to develop a relatively interesting romance in such a short book. Typically, character development that is believable takes considerably more time, but Connor managed to pack in a decent story arc into this light-hearted suspense fling. I wasn't particularly fascinated by what great "mystery" he was hiding, and I feel like, once again, there could have been an extra 100 pages tacked onto this to make it more of an actual thriller that would keep me coming back for more. Sophia has potential as a character, but I feel like this book sold her short. The writing was enjoyable and competent, but I feel like the author should have given a bit more to the book. I'd read more of Connor's work, as she clearly has a clever pen, but I would hope that some of her other work is a bit more substantive.
